In the book Cyberville Stacy Horn described the experiences of ECHO (East Coast Hang Out). This is a local bulletin board that she started in New York. This group includes considerable face-to-face contact, but also contact of a very different kind. Horn described the relationship she had had with a participant, whose handle was kac. Kac died. Quoting Horn: "Her words are still here, we rarely throw anything out. When I come across them it's like seeing a ghost. She's haunting me. That's something that doesn't happen anywhere else. Unless they are famous, the words of the dead are typically stored away in closets, forgotten."
